The classic cars of one hundred points will travel from September 22 to 24, a large portion of Yucatecan peninsula. A state that offers the world the best in gastronomy, archaeology, culture, and tradition will be the stage to drive the route designed by Luis Lerdo de Tejada.
During these days, 35 participants will compete in classic cars from 1950 to 1979 and enjoy approximately 750 km. of the Mayan region. Unique Rally Clásico leaves from Mérida to Chichén Itzá, the second day goes from Chichén Itzá through Valladolid to Izamal (Hacienda Ticum), the last route will be from Hacienda Ticum to Maní and will finish in Paseo Montejo, Mérida.
Sebastián Figueroa Gasque conceived the idea two years ago and recruited the best specialists to make it happen. “I’m from Mérida, Yucatán, and my dad is from Valladolid, Yucatán, which is between Mérida and Cancún, so that’s where this idea of touring our state in classic cars comes from. We come from a family of mechanics, and we have always been passionate about the history of racing and the dedication that comes with owning one of these cars.”
“The regularity rally is not speed but precision, there will be stops in the municipalities for people to see this rolling museum… We will sleep in Chichén Itzá on September 22nd, where the equinox occurs, the equinox is when the serpent Kukulcán descends, in the sun with a shadow, which the Mayans with their grand architecture designed so that twice a year it’s seen…. The rally’s logo is a chacmol as it’s in Chichén Itzá and the base of chacmol is a road that’s part of the racing event and on the edge is zero, because the Mayans invented zero in numbering.” commented the Unique Rally Classic’s founder.
Don Julio Cuenca is one of the best restorers of classic cars in the world, he has a 50-year career in the world of motorsport and has participated in national and international events. “A 100-point car is a car that’s 100% disarmed, everything is new in the car, it takes a process of approximately 2500 to 3000 hours. There’s an important complexity in getting parts, the labor of tinsmiths, mechanics…” explained Cuenca.
Gastronomy will play an important role in the event. Roberto Solís will host Chef at gala dinner, where his creations can be tasted. During the race, five chefs will be on hand to cook dishes typical of the region and Mayan cuisine.
Rally Director Michel Jourdain Jr. highlights the importance of sharing motorsport as a family. For him, racing has been part of his family since before his birth and it will be the first time, he participates in a motorsport event with his sailor wife.
